Unable to protect sheet due to merged cells

    Hi

I have a workbook that has certain cells that I want protect but it not letting me do it because some of the cells are merged.

I see on the internet somewhere there was a quick and easy way to do it but I cant find now. Any ideas on how I can do it?

Re: Unable to protect sheet due to merged cells

By default all cells are locked. Until sheet protection is turned on locked or not is irrelevant.

When you turn sheet protection on you have various options, like selecting locked or unlocked cells

What exactly are you trying to do. Protection applies to sheets, locking applies to cells. Unprotected, whether cells are merged or not you can turn locking on or off.

Re: Unable to protect sheet due to merged cells

Im trying to protect a sheet so data cant be amended but allow certain cells to be amended.

Some of the cells I have are merged.

If you look at the workbook I think the issue starts with rows 6 and 7. These I need unprotected.

Re: Unable to protect sheet due to merged cells

You appear to have unlocked all the cells, which I presume you have done manually since as I said earlier all cells start out by default as Locked.

Think of locked cells like an electric fence around a field to restrain cattle. The fence will only work if the electricity is switched on. In Excel lockimng only works if Sheet protection is ON.

So relock all cells that you don't want users to access then turn on sheet protection selecting whatever parameters you want.

As a complete aside try to avoid merging cells. They just cause too much trouble with other Excel functionality and most of us avoid them like the plague.
Instead of merged cells using a simple Centre Across Selection format is just as good.
