But one thing, have you considered telling the management personnel in your company that the request my not be possible to fulfill? I've talked to so many programmers in more than 20 years that are scared to death to their managers that they are making tough and/or impossible requests and make alternative suggestions. I think this happens either because they are not knowledgeable about their tools and are not confident or they don't want to guide management properly as to what is possible and what isn't because they are not authorities in their companies.
I'm not saying that you are not knowledgeable about Excel, I'm just saying that you might want to consider this as a tactic to help your management gain a better understanding of the tools you are working with to help them out. I consult all the time and I get many questions from people that are almost impossible to answer because some of them want software products to do things that programming languages can't even do because the are not well enough developed yet.
