Need to "Unpivot" Data to Standard Columnar Form

    Hello all,

I'm not sure if there's a simple name for what I'm trying to do, but I think it can be described fairly easily.

The data I have looks like this (note that this is an example, and the # of columns and rows are undefined):

    EE1.png

The data I want looks like this

    EE2.png

I am looking for the most dummy proof way to automate this sort of transformation. My thought was I'd select the data range, and then run a macro that produces the results I want. Perhaps, though, Excel comes with this sort of functionality, and no VBA solution is required.

Hi ace and welcome to the forum,

Power Query has this feature built in. Time to learn Power Query????

See https://trumpexcel.com/unpivot-data/ or search on "Power Query UnPivot".
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

Martin! Thanks a lot, that was super easy.

Can you give me a "nudge" in the right direction for the case where I want my months (row 1) to be in column 1, followed by account name, followed by value? I happened to have the case that was built perfectly for the link you gave, but I'm struggling to be flexible with it.

It was easier than I though. Just needed to "move" the month column after I did the unpivot.

GREAT!! I hope Power Query is a tool you can now own and learn more about.
