Error when VBA tries to use Adobe "Automation Error -object disconnected from clients"

I was running this macro to get excel from PDF documents.

it was working fine (on another users computer) a few weeks ago but now I'm getting this error

-2147417848 (80010108)
Automation Error
The object invoked has disconnected from its clients.

when it gets to this point

then excel crashes.

(Note you need a professional version of adobe for this to work -> adobe DC, adobe X etc. I have adobe DC)

Any suggestions on what I can try in order to fix?
Maybe a reinstall of the adobe that it is talking to?

I also tried a different piece of VBA code to take PDF to excel and that also failed at a similar point in the macro.

This is running on a windows 8 machine.
