Could someone please explain what the code in the second line is doing? What is the asterisk for? And what are all the .........for?

The c represents the row number of the last used cell in the active column on your worksheet. The asterisk is a wildcard character representing any data.

It finds teh last cell in a column. How does it do that when * can be any data?

[Mumps1]

It looks for the last piece of data in any cell. When it can longer find data in a cell, that means that the row above is the last cell.
