Number identical cells within groups of data

I'm looking for a macro that adds a number to cells that are duplicates of preceding cells. The counter should reset everytime it hits a cell with "**" in it. Example:

AA
BB
CC
**
BB
CC
BB
AA
**
PP
RR
BB
CC
**
AA
AA
BB
NN
BB
BB
**

Should become:
AA
BB
CC
**
BB
CC
BB2
AA
**
PP
RR
BB
CC
**
AA
AA2
BB
NN
BB2
BB3
**
