Data validation tool failure

I'm adding a data validation tool which works when I first create it, but after I close and reopen the file, the button no longer displays the list, and I cannot get rid of the button except by deleting the column that the button is in. This is running on Excel Professional Plus 2010/Windows 7/VMWare.

Edit: I switched to a list box, and this solved my problem.
