Last occupied cell in row or column

I, like, I expect, many others, frequently need to identify the next unoccupied cell in a row or column.
Because I am self taught and lazy I have stuck with formulations such as:-

Both these can give misleading answers in certain situations.
How do other people deal with this problem?

I do not think, there is one; it all depends on the nature and type of data occupying the cells.
I normally use this line, but it has also its own limitations.
