I am not sure if this will work for you but I basically set the value to what I wanted. It seems to work and doesn't mess up the data validation box.
Range("Y53:AA53").Value = "H-13"
Whereas Y53:AA53 is where the drop-down list is located. "H-13" was the value I wanted it to default at. The only thing, which I don't know if it matters, is that the value being set doesn't need to be listed in the data validation list. It could be set and any value. Even so, it does not mess up the cell when attempting to use the drop-down list.
