Hi all,
How do add 20% to figure in say column G6 and have the total appear in H6.......please help!!!!![]()
=G6*1.2
That's maths, not Excel
Ok great thanks ur help....i do believe that is a excel formula though!! hence my post.......
Yes, it's an Excel formula, but the principle behind it is pure maths. If you understand the maths, then creating a suitable formula is easy. To add 20% to something, you multiply it by 1.2. So, to add 20% to cell G6, you multiply cell G6 by 1.2
Multiplication in Excel happens with the multiplication operator, the * symbol
A formula starts with a = sign.
This is really, really basic Excel "how to".
If you are struggling to enter a simple formula like that, you may want to spend a few hours going over a basic Excel tutorial. Microsoft has excellent free training resources on line. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/tr...101782702.aspx

the principle behind many excel formulas is math-that doesn't make it an invalid question in an excel help forum. why is it better to try and look it up in help than ask here?
Josie
if at first you don't succeed try doing it the way your wife told you to
The idea is to get a grip on how to enter a calculation in Excel. If you don't know how to enter A * B in Excel, then you're pretty stuffed. Hence my link to Microsoft training materials.
I don't believe that a forum is the replacement for basic user training. A lot of questions in this forum are pure RTFM and could easily be solved if the OP took the trouble to consult the help files.
At other times, ID-Ten-T will prevail, so even if a forum post answers the question, the underlying problem is not solved.
well the help files aren't always that easy to find things in and they aren't always right either. if you're under pressure or just need a quick fix for a program you rarely use it may be simpler to post a question. if you don't know the math either it's definitely easier to post. ;-)
True.
Save your sweat, don't even try to put in an effort. Post in a forum and someone will find an answer. Sign up to a Q&A site, post in a completely inadequate sub forum, like "Introduce Yourself" and find your question answered.
Now, in the general scheme of things: What motivates people to learn and better themselves?
- completely ignorant about Excel
- unwilling to try the help files
- happen upon an online Q&A site
- blunder the question into the first sub-forum they find (probably because they have been pushed to post by the automated "service")
- receive an answer that works
How well did that go with regards to user education and teaching a person how to fish?
As long as people like you and I are around and willing to answer the most basic RTFM questions, this (unplanned) action plan will still succeed.
It won't do much for the OP's learning curve, though. But maybe that was never the intention. Slam, bang, "thank you, 'mam" may be the preferred approach theses days. I don't need to know how it works, I just need to finish my assignment.
Well, enjoy.
See what you've started calleyrose!
Both are correct but I tend to side with npamcpp. Not exactly a chair and keyboard problem but RTFM seems to be the prevailing solution here. I must agree with the JosephP signature. Knowing the right question to ask is paramount but newbies often struggle and get lambasted for it. I believe in being much more tolerant. This one's a bit cheeky considering it's the first posting.
So we all win in the end with any luck. Kiss and make up!

If I helped, please don't forget to add to my reputation. (click on the star below the post)
If the problem is solved, please: Select Thread Tools (on top of your 1st post) -> Mark this thread as Solved.
Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.
my experience of forums is that 90% of people just want an answer, not to learn or understand why or how it works, and most of them post maybe once or twice. the other 10% engage and tend to come back repeatedly. the 10% are more enjoyable to deal with but I don't take issue with the rest other than the ones who want a free consultant (them I just ignore)
I commend your desire to educate though.
well thanks ur replies.....but obviously far too much polotics for my liking....dnt think i'll bother again...!
My simple understanding of the forum...aks a question...get some help...obviously people on here have BA Hons' in spreadsheets and too much time on their hands!
Thanks Again
Calleyrose,
Chuck the politics. You are most welcome to post your questions here, however big or small and you will get all the replies and help you need.
If I have helped, Don't forget to add to my reputation (click on the star below the post)
Don't forget to mark threads as "Solved" (Thread Tools->Mark thread as Solved)
Use code tags when posting your VBA code:
Your code here
Well, just speaking for myself, I come here to answer questions and have my own answered in turn...
For a question this fundamental, though, I think OP should go through tutorial stuff for their own sake, to become a better excel user.
Because...
maybe npamcpp is being "political", but on the other hand, literally one minute after OP asked the question, the very first line npamcpp typed was the answer...?
I mean, at some level, if you can't speak the language, then how can you ask questions, let alone understand the answers?
