    Conditional formatting

I have a column A where, for each row, I want the cell to change color if the corresponding cell in column B = "yes".

I have tried marking column A, used conditional formatting "use a formula to determine which cells to format", and set the formula to =$b="yes" and then changed the format...and Excel rejected it. I can't find anything similar in the forum (unless I'm completely misreading something somewhere.)

what tiny piece of information am I overlooking here?
