    Formatting numbers

Sorry, I havn't a clue what a 'thread' is nor a 'URL', ie I don't speak computer. I have a question, so I hope that this is the right place to post it, and any help would be gratefully received.

    Question:
How can I simply fill in numbers without having the excell thingy automatically round them up or down if decimals and, at the same time, not add the superfluous zero decimal for simple whole numbers - without having to format every cell independently? eg if I want to type in 5, I don't want 5.0 to come up (as formatted for numbers with one decimal place) and if I type in 5.5, I don't want the number automatically rounded up to 6, as formatted for General numbers. This strikes me as not too much to ask of the programme but I can't find a way around it -0 the obvious way would be to set the 'General' no. function to allow decimals. Can someone tell me how to get around this.

    With eternal gratitude,
    Alex Murray

These three messages to date are a thread. If people add more, it will still be one thread. It's methaphorical ...

The address you typed into your browser to get here is a URL, and so is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL.

if I type in 5.5, I don't want the number automatically rounded up to 6, as formatted for General numbers.
That doesn't occur with cells formatted as General.
