    include header row in sorting

    I am usually pretty good at figuring out how to accomplish things in Excel, but this seems like a very remedial task that is continually eluding me. Normally, when I setup a spreadsheet, Excel automatically recognizes the top row as a header and does not sort it with the rest of the data; however, in one of my recent spreadsheets, this is not the case. When I go to sort a particular column, the header row gets mixed in with the rest. Is there a way to designate a particular row as a header?

    Yes,

    when you invoke the Data|Sort feature, there is a radio button at the bottom to include Header or Not.
    Where there is a will there are many ways.

    Actually, that didn't do what I hoped it would do. If I use the Data | Sort method, I can use the radio button to temporarily designate a header row, but is there a way to make it permanent? I want to be able to use the quick sort button on the toolbar and still recognize the header row.

    Are there empty rows in between header and main data?

    Are the headers similar to the data?

    I am not sure why else it would not default to the first row being header row.

    I have two workbooks that are having the same problem. In the first one, the data is very similar to the labels -- it is all text -- so I can understand that this is difficult for Excel to differentiate. In the other one, the labels are all text, and the data is mostly numbers. I don’t know why it didn’t automatically designate the labels as a header row. However, I figured that if Excel typically does this automatically, it should also be something that can be done manually.
