Looking up things in another workbook

Hi - I'm mostly a design/artwork person, but use Excel as and when I need to, usually because data has been supplied in it. So I've learnt a bit along the way but have huge gaps in my knowledge and no one in the business can help me....

I have 2 workbooks. Each has a column containing a product number. I want to be able to enter a value from workbook 1 into workbook 2 by looking up the product number in wb2, reading along the line to column F, and pasting that value back into workbook 1. And so on all down the page.

I am reasonably experienced with Applescript, and I could do it in Filemaker with my eyes shut, but I have no idea if this is a trivial task or an immensely complicated one in Excel!

I would be very grateful for any help (but will be on holiday all next week, so please don't feel offended if I don't get straight back to you!)

    Thanks
    Emma

Thanks, I've had a look at that and since it used 'COUNTIF' (which I haven't used before!) I've managed to put in a column in workbook 1 that counts occurrences of the product code in workbook 2. The results being either 1 or 0, which is what I would expect.

But now, if it is 1, I need to show the value from column F of the corresponding row of workbook 2, and I don't feel any closer to that.

Sorry if I'm using all the wrong terminology, I hope you can understand what I mean, and thanks for your very quick reply!

I'm working on a VLOOKUP, with the first parameter A8, the second derived from dragging the cursor across the source workbook ([WEEE Listing - Updated 12.03.07.xls]weef00261'!$A$2:$D$4602) and the 3rd is 4 (I've got rid of columns A and B to make life simpler, so I'm now looking up in A and want the value from D), and finally 'TRUE' (though for all I know it should be FALSE).

    Either way it returns #N/A.

    I'll keep looking....

Sorted! The numbers were not formatted the same. Got it working, thanks!
