When I type "2/29" and hit enter it returns "2/1/2029"

Right click on the cell and choose Format Cells. Click on Date, Custom and enter mm/dd for 02/02, or mmm/dd for Feb/02, or mmm - dd for Feb - 02 or something along those lines to get the month and date that you want.

What do you mean by 'short date'. i.e. what do you expect to see?
Is that date meant to be 29th February? And since 2014 (the default year if you enter 2/29) is not a leap year, Excel will not know what you mean.

Thanks guys. It was the Feb 29th thing that was throwing it off. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.
