It can be anywhere you want but, in Excel 2003, you will have to define a Named Range for the range that contains the list data. In later versions, you can refer to the range but it's good practice to name it and, often, you'll want to make it a Dynamic Named Range so you can add to it without having to adjust any references.

Got it! Thank you. I left out that danged "=" sign before the range name.
