    Conditional formatting adjacent cells...

    Hello,

    I know there must be an example of what I am looking for but I have been unsuccessful in locating an example that works for me.

    I have 2 columns of data for Deviations and Out of Tolerance. Currently I have the Out of Tolerance column formatted so that it displays the text in red if a measurement is out of tolerance. I would like the cell next to the o.o.t. cell (showing the deviation) to also display in red if the o.o.t. cell is red.

    I tried conditional formatting by o.o.t. cell >0 and <0 but that didn't work.

    In this example, b3, d2, d3, and d4 are all o.o.t. and as such are displayed in red in my spreadsheet. I now need to make a3, c2, c3 and c4 display in red as well.

    Any help would be most appreciated!

    Randy

    Hey Randy;

    You're on the right track with conditional formatting. What you want to do is change the way that the conditional formatting is applied.

    So... Lets start by highlighting range A3:B3
    Go to the conditional formatting tab on the ribbon, new Rule
    Use a formula to determine which cells..
    In the forumula, write =$B$3<0
    This makes the equation for both A3 and B3 to be: if B3<0, then apply conditional formatting to both A3 and B3

    Then it's just a matter of coping that set of conditional formatting to other areas!

    Hiya,
    Basically, the formula you would use needs to be based on the column you want the formatting to be based on (in this case two conditional formatting checks, one for column B (=$B2<>0) and one for D (=$D2<>0) ) but you can set the formatting of those checks to apply to any range, so here $A$2:$B$4 and likewise the other would be $C$2:$D$4.

    I attached an example. Im not too great at explaining.

    Thanks for the responses guys. It looks like I was incorrectly selecting the columns when I guess I should have selected the range. It works now. Thanks again!
