How do I exclude blank cells when using conditional formatting

My problem is similar to the problem listed in this thread http://www.excelforum.com/excel-form...ormatting.html

However, the answer in that thread does not work for me for some reason. I am trying to fill conditionally format cells in red that have a date less than today and are not blank. Here is the formula I used:

="AND($G5<TODAY(), NOT(ISBLANK($G5)))"

I am also attaching a copy of the file.

I have already spent a couple of hours with this! Any suggestions?
