If you're just trying to get to the last cell you can do ctrl - end. Otherwise the only advice I have is to be careful. I imagine you're trying to highlight all the way to the bottom in which case you can start scrolling down and then hold shift then hit end I believe that should work. I'm pretty new to excel so if that doesn't solve your problem don't give up.
I've noticed that if I paste over where cells were and the previous data extended well beyond my current data that it seems to hold onto those extra rows/columns as if they still contain something. So what I've found is that I have to highlight the rows or columns and delete them then save and that gets rid of the issue for me (provided I understand your issue).

Highlight all empty rows and delete rows (crtrl+-) do the same for the columns. Save. Always works for me. I cant install addins but that might work as well.
