How to highlight row depending on chosen drop-down value

    Hi Guys,

I'm looking to use a drop-down to allow me to highlight a complete row depending on what I choose, each row is unique.

So if my drop-down is say 20 different words and I choose "Oil" I want it to look down the table and highlight the row that shows oil prices.

Example of column A might be as shown below (Starting in say A3).

    (A3)Petrol
    (A4)Wood
    (A5)Oil
    (A6)F/Fuel
    (A7)Other

From my drop-down located in A1 I choose "Oil" I want it to select only row A5 and either highlight it or blank out the rest, can anyone please explain to me the easiest way to do this, been trying all morning with no success.

    Thanks in advance.

Highlight range A1:A7(Your range). In Conditional Formatting rules put this

    =$a$1

    Choose color. OK.

Re: How to highlight row depending on chosen drop-down value

    Hi Fotis,

Thanks for the prompt reply and information, now I become the total noob and ask stupid questions, I have done as you said above, but this is not highlighting any rows or indeed cells, do you have any idea where I am going wrong ???

When highlighting my range, I included A1 that is the cell that hold the drop-down list, is this correct and continued down the list of names, I was assuming that when I changed the drop-down the row with the corresponding name would have changed to the color i selected, this wasn't the case.

    Any ideas ?

No no there not stupid questions. Only stupid people that they don't ask if they don't know something.

And it is MY mistake. The correct way is:

    =$a3=$a$1

Re: How to highlight row depending on chosen drop-down value

    Thanks Fotis,

That did indeed work perfectly, and thanks for taking the time to create and post an example too, is there a way I can get this to highlight the complete row and not just the first cell of each row or is that perhaps too complex ?

    Thanks,

You just have to adjust your range from $A$3:$A$18 in my example to what you need. Example $A$3:$P$18
