    Unhappy Locked Cells Not Working

I have a 17MB spreadsheet that I want to lock down parts of. All of my tabs have various cells locked and password protected, but one tab's locked cells are not working correctly. After password protected, the locked cells cannot be clicked on, but you can highlight unlocked cells on either side of the locked cells, and drag the mouse over the locked cells to unlocked cells on the other side, and whala, can now copy the locked cells. You can't do this on my other tabs, just the one tab is giving me problems. I have the check box to allow selecting unlocked cells only. Please help. Thanks.

    Re: Locked Cells Not Working

I can't, the embedded formulas are something I cannot share. I saw a couple of threads similar to mine posted in the last 5 years(never resolved that I know of), so I think my problem is not unique, although rare. I may move the "sacred" formulas away from unlocked cells that are contributing to the problem, or move them to another tab and reference back. Thanks.

I've never seen this problem. What version is it happening in? Does it still have that problem when you clear the formulas? (If so, you can upload the sheet with all confidential info removed).

    Re: Locked Cells Not Working

Excel 2010. I moved the formulas(5 batches of 6 columns each) to the far right of my spreadsheet, so that there are not unlocked cells on boths sides of the locked cells, and now everything is protected. This wasn't my preferred way to handle the problem, but got it resolved. I've used locked cells and passwords for years now in a few versions of Excel, and this is a first for me as well. Thanks for your time.

    Re: Locked Cells Not Working

I did reproduce your issue. Seems in 2010 at least, you can create a bridge across locked cells if there are unlocked cells to either side. Doesn't seem to be a limit to this either so if A and G are unlocked, You can select A5:G10 and copy those cells even though you protected with the option of "do not select locked cells" Interesting.

    Re: Locked Cells Not Working

The problem does seem confined to 2010 (havent tested on Excel 2007 though). As such, the level of protection of formulas seems restricted since any user can copy these in between locked cells while choosing two unlocked cells. The seemingly unpractical solution is to disbale 'selection of unlocked cells' as well while protecting the worksheet

Does Microsoft read content here, or what's the best way to fill them in on this "bug"? Thanks.

One more question related to locking cells. Is there a way to stop someone from using developer tools to unlock the cells? Thanks.

    Re: Locked Cells Not Working

Excel has come a long way over the years, but one thing most of us agree on, it is not secure. Even with all the locking and password protecting, for someone who really WANTS to get at your data and formulas, they will get at it, and usually in less than 5 minutes.

All the locking and passwords are to keep honest people honest. They won't stop the knowledgable dishonest people.

In my office, the number one way we use to secure our stuff from prying eyes is the PDF format. We send them PDFs, not Excel docs.
