Opening .xls in 2010 Error: file is in a different file format than its extension indicate

Hello- I'm banging my head against the wall on this one. Searched this site, but can't find a solution.

When I try to open an .xls file in office 2010, I get the following error: 'file is in a different file format than its extension indicates'. It then opens in protected mode.

What is wrong. The file opens fine in 2003, but when I try to open in 2010, I get that error.

    Any advice?

    Thanks!

Setup: Office 2003 and 2010 - All versions are up to date and running in Win 7.

Good question and I should have mentioned this.

Seems to be just this one and I've tried repairing it.

    Thx!

can you save a copy in 2003 then remove all data and post it-assuming it shows the same problem?

I found the problem and was able to fix it.

There was a cell in one of the tabs that was as validation cell (pull down menu). I changed it to a standard cell, saved the file. Opened it in 2010, changed it back to a validation cell, and then saved it again from within 2010 into xls format.

No idea why, but now it appears to be working. I haven't done extensive testing, but now it seems to be ok.

    Hope this helps others.
