Are we talking about a TextBox or a cell ?
Elegant Simplicity............. Not Always
I believe it should be cell![]()

textboxes have an autofit too ;-)
Josie
if at first you don't succeed try doing it the way your wife told you to
Yes a text box. Normally the box surrounds the text in a largish rectangle, but now it surrounds the text in a thin rectangle. For example if the text is 50 letters long then the rectangle is 50 letters long.
change the textbox multiline property to true if it's active x...
Thank you. How do I do that!

1. Go to Excel settings and options ......... Round button, top left of the excel screen
2. Select Excel Options - bottom button
3. Select "Show developer tb in ribbon" 3rd row down
4. selct ok
5. Select the ribbon developer tab
6. Select "Design Mode"
7. Select your textbox ..................... If it won't select it isn't ActiveX
8. Find the multiline property in the properties display list
9. Set to true
10. Resize the textbox to suit
11. Deselect Development
Thank you again... but I can't find the 'Round Button, top left of the excell screen'. I only have the save and print button. I have 'Excell non commercial use'

Sounds to me like your textbox is not an ActiveX but a form... Try right clicking on the textbox ... If it selects ok try resizing it

I don't seem to have achieved my goal.. the text box can be resized but when I use autofit it behaves with one long line only again. I couldn't find a multiline reference on the properties list.
Thanks for your help. I have learned a few things!

If the properties were listed then it is activeX, in which case you should be able to select and resize it..
If there is no multiline property it's probably a label and not a textbox....
Can you upload the file - it would save loads of messing about...
Thanks for your help Andy. I'm running out of time. I'll have to think about what I've done. Thanks again
