    Can't format cells

    Hi

I'm trying to change the percentages of my cells to numbers. When I click format cells - numbers -- it doesn't have any effect as the cells remain as percentages. It is data downloaded from the web and I've checked that the worksheet is unlocked.

How can I format the cells back to numbers?

    Thanks

    Re: Can't format cells

Is your "percentages" numbers or it's text that looks like percentages?

Use =ISNUMBER(A1), for value in A1.Which is the result?

It's data downloaded from the web so I'm assuming it's numbers with text percentages in front but I can't change it...

Using the functions ISNUMBER & ISTEXT, you'll find if is text or numbers. I believe that yours are text...

Upload a very small sample of your data for testing these..

Depending on the layout you may also try ( after selecting the column) - Data - Text to Columns - Finish

    Re: Can't format cells

OK I have these numbers which I need to be multiplied in the easiest way:

    $7.66
    $0.52
    $0.99
    $0.04
    $0.06
    $6.39
    $17.32
    $0.09
    $0.94
    $15.78
    $0.16
    $12.68
    $1.16
    $9.46
    $0.50
    $9.61
    $20.26
    $0.12
    $0.04
    $0.00
    $19.63
    $25.11
    $0.29
Using * with the cell I want multiplying them by gives a 'value' error and I'm sure that this is because they have $ infront. I've tried formatting cells and changing it to 'number' but the $ remains, even if I unlock the protection.

The only way to change them is to insert ABS(20.26) in front and that converts it to a number. However I'm having to do this manually at the moment and it will take ages for all the data. Is there an easier way or a way to have this done automatically?

    Thanks

    Re: Can't format cells

Use the text to columns option to separate $ from numbers.

Then i believe that you have to add a zero for getting numbers.

I still believe that if you upload a sample workbook we'll be able to help you immediately to find your solution.

    Re: Can't format cells

Please guide me through what steps I need to do:

I need the revenue column and column B (heading E) as numbers and not currencies. I don't want to have to do it manually for all the data by adding ABS or manually deleting the $sign.

    Sample workbook attached.

    Thanks

    Re: Can't format cells

ok in Text to Columns, I'm clicking:

    Deliminated - next -

Deliminaters: tick tabs and other - the symbol is $ - next

    tick the general box

    Finish

And the data is deleting itself instead of deleting the $ so I'm left with blank columns...

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks
