Condense duplicate data to one row, data in same column in new row

    Hi,

I found an old thread about this very subject (from 2007 or 2008), with an answer attached... but I'm just far too stupid to understand how to do it!

So I have to ask again, for a more simplistic explanation.

In my example I have result data from the 2013 USPGA Tour, ordered by player (column A) with subsequent columns detailing their finishing position in each event.

I simply want to condense each player's performance data into one row - as doing it by hand after each event is very time-consuming.

Is there a way of using a simple formula, macro or pivot table (or whatever) to merge each player into one row, but keep each column in the same position (ie to correspond to each weekly event).

And I can't stress enough, how easy you need to make this... imagine I'm about 10 years old!!

    Thanks, Matt

Hi and welcome to the forum

You can do this quite easily with a pivot table

I have started it for you, take a loook and let me know if that is something you can work with?

    Hi,

Many thanks for that... you're halfway there (unless I've misread the attahced sheet).

In that, the finished table should retain the player's finishing position (the numerical value included on the orignal... 3 or T36 or CUT) as opposed to simply recording whether or not they played in that event. Presumably covered in the example with a '1'.

So I'm not just looking for a 'count' of performance (if they played or not) but if they did play... where did they finish. What position.

    Hope that's clear.

As I say I might have missed something... highly likely!

    Cheers, Matt

    Hi

OK I understand what you want, but a pivot table works on values, not text (it can count text, but thats about it). I will have to figure another way around this for you

    Hi,

My (rather poor) understanding is that a pivot table isn't exactly the right thing for this... i.e. it's text and there are lots of blank fields in the data sheet.

However, what I'm after, I would have thought, isn't something that's tremendously hard to do with Excel.

So hopefully this is an interesting poser, rather than a wild goose chase!!

    Thanks for your help though!
