Excel file disappeared during Explorer crash. Any way to recover it?

Hey,

I'm looking for some help with recovering Excel files that have completely disappeared.

I was working on fairly large Excel file (~100mb), saved it to Desktop, and closed it. Immediately after that, I opened a different Excel file of similar size, but as it was opening, Windows Explorer crashed. Explorer restarted itself and now both the files are missing without any trace that it existed.

Autorecover is set to save every 10 minutes, but there are no recovery files. I've tried checking the Drive:\User\Name\Appdata\... file path, but to no avail. The file names don't result in any hits when I try a Windows search of my hard drive.

Both files were .xlsx files being used in Excel 2007

Is there any way to recover these files, or am I s.o.l? Any direction, info, recovery methods, etc you could provide would be appreciated as recovering the files would save me two days of work.

search for files the same size, they may have just been renamed with a string like bcd01af2.tmp or similar without .tmp try changing the .tmp back to xls or renaming it adding .xls

No hits are coming up for modified today or for of similar size in search. Thanks for the suggestion though

well it cant have disappeared, there must be a file somewhere windows doesn't just delete files it may do odd things with them but they are still there somewhere. did you search the whole drive? is it on a server somewhere

I managed to use Piriform's Recuva to recover an older version of the sheet with half of the work I did, but I'm at a loss for where the actual version disappeared to. It was on my own personal computer, so server issues are out of the questions.
