Mac Excel - ESC does not close find dialog box.

I'm using Excel for Mac 2011 14.2.5 and have a very simple question. How come hitting ESC doesn't close a dialog box? I do a lot of searching in my workbooks and I hate having to click "cancel" every time I find what I'm looking for. ESC is much easier, but doesn't close the box. Is there something I can do to change this?

Edited to say that this really makes no sense, but sometimes ESC works to close the find dialog box but sometimes it doesn't. Any ideas??
