Problems opening older versions of Excel spreadsheets

I seem to have problems opening older versions of Excel spreadsheets
Someone sent me a version created in Excel 2007. I have 201 version
They have sent three different files
Each time Excel hangs

I have the same problem with Word documents in a similar fashion

What's wrong?
