    Calculating Angle to True North

    G-Day Excel forum.

I'm struggling to wrap my head around some relatively simple trigonometry, I'm attempting to calculate the bearing of a vector linking two sets of Easting/Northing coordinates and while I've found no shortage of equations online that should provide an answer, none seem to work in my excel sheet. The data comes from the southeastern hemisphere (i.e. Outback Australia) and my answer is needed in degrees to true north, I've attached a copy of my previous attempts to this post but I've got no idea where I'm buggering it up. If anyone out there could provide me with an equation for these data and the equivalent excel code I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Cheers

    Hi MattRNR

Just a basic sheet to give you an idea if this is what you require!
See the attached. Cells A13:B17 is just a reminder from your school days, with reference to Quandrant Bearings!
Are you needing this for construction!

Edit: The distance is in metre's

Re: Calculating Angle to True North

Cheers Kev that works perfectly but the code has me a bit lost, i understand the conditional formatting, Quadrant Bearings and the conversion to degrees, however would you be able to run me through the logic behind the Arc tangent and ABS components? (I'm sure its ludicrously simple). The Code is part of a larger algorithm for processing airborne LiDAR data for forest carbon estimation (my thesis project), I'm just trying to wrap my head around coordinate geometry in a more familiar excel format before i try to write it in.

Thanks also to dogberry, I already tried that code but to no avail...

    Hi MattRNR

The ABS is converting negative numbers to positive.
ATAN is the same as the inverse tan on the calculator, we are returning the angle.
