Last night a messed up version of an large Excel 2003 file was accidentally saved before my laptop was shut down. There is no backup for this file. Is there a way for me to restore the file to its earlier state (before the messed save)?

No, unless you have enabled automatic backup in Excel OR you have saved the file somewhere else before messing up

A system restore to an earlier date won't do it?
I dont think so.. below is what the welcome window of System Restore says :-
"system restore does not affect any of your documents, pictures, or other personal data. Recently installed programs and driers might be uninstalled."
