Changing the formatting of a lot of numbers

A spreadsheet shows up with a column of numbers that are formatted as text. Of course, formulas don't work because Excel sees the characters as text.

Highlighting and formatting as numbers doesn't do the complete job. When you select a cell and then put the cursor in the formula bar and "ENTER', then the number starts acting like a number.

How do you change hundreds of these without selecting each of them one at a time?

Select the column, and format as number / general, choose TextToColumns from the data tab and click finish.
