R1C1 reference style default checked - driving me crazy

Does anyone know how to permanently uncheck that option? If you click the MS button, then "Excel Options", then ""Formulas", it is the first option in the "Working with formulas" section. This being checked makes your alpha columns display as numerals. Not a big deal until you try to copy a VLookup throughout multiple rows: It screws the reference up. I have to uncheck this box every time I open a file. Can I default this box to UNchecked somewhere?

the method you described should work and fix the problem.
If not, Excel uses whatever the first workbook opened in that session uses. If you save a workbook in A1 reference style and then make sure you open that first, you'll be in A1 reference style.
Remember to check your personal.xls workbook, too. Maybe that one is opening first.

    check in
    c:\documents and settings\user_name\application data\microsoft\excel\XLSTART
    and
    c:\program files\microsoft office\office12\XLSTART

what files do you have in those folders? also check any other folder specified as a startup folder in excel options

Both of those folders are completely empty. I am on a network at work so who knows where it is, but it isn't on my PC

if you look in excel options, in the advanced section, do you have another startup folder specified?
if not are you happy with editing the registry?

I don't find anything about a starup folder in advanced options. Editing the registry? No, I doubt I have the access needed to do that...and that is kind of scary anyway, but thanks for the suggestions.

try disabling all add-ins and see if that helps.
also try starting excel in safe mode-hold down the ctrl key while starting the application as normal and say yes to the prompt-and see if you still have r1c1 references

You are a genius! Starting Excel in safe-mode fixed it, permanently. I even restarted my PC to see if it would revert and it did not. All of my spreadsheets now open with alpha columns instead of numeric. Thank you so much!
