exit compatibility mode without closing sheet?

quick Question, I use office 2007, and often receive files from customers in 2003 format, also most of our downloaded reports from our website are in the older format
Even after saving a workbook as xlsx it will still be in compatibility mode until the sheet is closed and re-opened, which is a pain as quite often I just want to do a quick vlookup or something on a temp workbook that I don't wish to keep

    any way round this?

    thanks, Steve

Check out the Convert Button, which will only appear if you open an earlier version spreadsheet.

Click on the Microsoft Office Button, in the left hand pane, select Convert

WARNING: Read the popup message that appears. If you use the Convert Button, the original is deleted after the conversion and cannot be recovered.

But, after the conversion has been performed, a second pop up window will ask if you wish to close and reopen the file in the new format,
answer YES and it automatically closes the old file and opens the new file in an a flash, almost instantly.

    @ spjmorris

Based on your last post it seems that you are satisfied with the solution(s) you've received but you haven't marked your thread as SOLVED. I'll do that for you now but please keep in mind for your future threads that Rule #9 requires you to do that yourself. If your problem has not been solved you can use Thread Tools (located above your first post) and choose "Mark this thread as unsolved".
    Thanks.

Also, as an infrequent user of the forum, you may have forgotten (or may not be aware) that you can thank those who have helped you by clicking the small star icon located in the lower left corner of the post in which the help was given. Cutter
thanks for the reminder, as you rightly point out I had forgotten about marking the thread as solved as I don't visit that often.

but when I do it's invaluable!!!
