AutoFilter like ability for a date range?

Hey everyone

I've built a catalogue which contains car parts.
To narrow down correct parts for vehicles, one of the filter columns is by the year of manufacture.
The data I've extracted is in a range format, e.g. 1997 - 2002 with around 5000 different parts. I don't really want to create individual entries for each year for each part.
I'd ultimately like a drop down menu, identical to the autofilter tool, which allows the selection of individual years as the vehicle years are not consist and ALWAYS cross over, eg.. 1997 - 2002, 1999 - 2005, 2000 - 2009 - so a part for a vehicle thats year is 2000 is a nightmare to narrow down!

Can anyone help with a way I can solve this?

I've done some basic excel work with cells changing colour depending on content but nothing this advance and I've no idea where to begin.
