How does one align dates sequentially.

Hi Danny here,

I am pasting a series of dates into a column in excel eg. 18Sep2012 06:34:24 AM. There may be a 1000 of these dates and they cannot be pasted sequentially. Is there a way in Excel 2010 that will sort the dates sequentially after pasting. And if there is, can an auto sort be set up.

Regards,
Danny.

if the dated really ARE dates (values) and not text (that just look like values), could you not just use the regular opton from the ribbon?

if that works for you, it should be a simple matter to record a macro to do it for you again, and then put a button on the worksheet and attach that macro to it
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Hi FDibbins,
They are not values. I've tried to sort or filter but there's no options available. They are time based and are pasted in the format '18Sep2012 10:54:44 AM'
Thanks for the reply,
Bset regards,
Danny.

Hi Danny,

Have you tried using a Text to Columns to change the formatting of the cells in question? Select Delimited and click next, deselect any boxes that are checked, and then click Finish. It will convert your time from '18Sep2012 10:54:44 AM to 9/18/2012 10:54:09 AM. You can then sort.

Hope this helps,
Phil

Hi Phil,
The delimiting action you suggested worked. I had to demerge all cells in the worksheet for the filter to work though.

Hi FDibbins,
I have not set up a macro as the three columns I am entering into the worksheet are coming from three different sources and the times are not aligning properly(nothing to do with excel. I will attempt to set up a macro if I can figure out the alignment issue. Otherwise it will be a wasted effort.

Thank you for your assistance.
Danny.

once you have the dates in your file, add a helper column and add 0 to them, that should convert them to dates, which you canthen sort
