Please read this entire post first. I am getting an error which reads 'CANNOT GROUP THAT SELECTION' when trying to use the 'Group' feature on a field in a pivot table. I know all of the standard reasons when getting this error. These reasons are:
1) Blank cells in the data
2) Having the data source extended below the data so that it includes blank cells.
2) Having a mix of different data types in same field (e.g. text and numbers together)
3) Having a data type in a field that's formatted with a different data type (e.g. a number in a text field).
The problem is, I get this error no matter what, and with any data set I try. Even when I create a small sample data set with none of the above problems.
Attached is a screen print where I show a small sample data set and the pivot table that I created from that data set. The data source of the pivot table only includes the table as shown and does not include blank rows beneath. So it has none of the above problems. When I try to group on 'Product' I get the same error which reads 'CANNOT GROUP THAT SELECTION'. Can anyone shed light on what the problem might be? I am using Excel 2010.
