Question How to set the format to enter dollars and cents without Excel rounding them

I used to use Excel 2003 a lot and it was easy. Now I have Excel 2007 but rarely use it and I have a heck of time finding the options for things that I commonly used in Excel 2003.

All I'm trying to do is set up a spread sheet for an order I'm making so I know exactly how much money to send the person I'm buying from. When I enter 499.97, Excel rounds it to 500. There used to be a dropdown (in 2003) where you selected the kind of numbers you were going to be entering, dollars and cents, positive or negative. That's all I want to know.

    Thanks for your help, morlaine

Click the button with the $ sign on the Home tab, Number group.

Lightbulb Re: How to round up or down based on the dollar amount and specific parameters!

Hi, I have read the threads above and have a slightly different problem that none of the thread seem to address. Maybe someone has the answer. I am using Excel 2002 and here is my problem.

I am doing calculations that involve adding together different columns together to get a total dollar amount. Based on the total dollar amount, say for example I have $23.35, I want to create a formula that will determine the following. If the cent amount is less than $.50, then change the total amount to $22.99. However if the cent amount is over $.50, then I want the total to go to $23.99. So in the example above, $22.99 would become the final figure. However if the total dollar and cent amount was, say for example, $23.69, the excel would make the dollar amount $23.99. Sounds simple, but after trying a lot of different formulas, I have discovered this is no easy feat. Maybe someone has a simple solution. Please enlighten me!

Thank you 'Shg". It works perfectly and your response time was stellar. Do you mind an explanation as to why it works and could the same thing be done if you were to break the dollar amount up into quarters. For example let's say you have different totals in each column. Let's say we want to round up by $0.25. So if the total is 23.45, it will round up to 23.49. If the total is 23.73, then it would round up to $23.74, if the total is $23.81, it would round up to 23.99, if the total was $23.17, then it would round down to $22.99. Hope I didn't throw a monkey wrench into this, but there have been occasions when I needed to break the rounding into quarters instead of halves. Thanks 'Shg'
