Problem with decimal and thousand separators

    Hello
I have a little problem with decimal and thousand separators: in particular I want to use "," (comma) as decimal separator and I do not want to have thousand separators at all.
Now I am using some data in which "." (dot) is used as decimal separator.

How could I replace that "dot" points with comma ones?
And I could I avoid the thousand separators?

    inqmobile,

    Welcome to the forum!
    Try changing the decimal separator.
In Excel 2003, it is in Tools --> Options --> International then change it from a period "." to a comma ","
Then format the cells as General so that it doesn't use thousand separators.
After that, if it is not displaying correctly, you could do a find and replace (ctrl+H) to replace periods with commas and replace all.
Beyond that, we'd have to see a workbook experiencing the problem.
    Hope that helps,

Re: Problem with decimal and thousand separators

I can't find the option tool... where is it? my excel is 2007.

Telling the truth I did this thing following these steps; I used the option "text to columns" (because my data came from a txt file) and in the step 3 I went to "advanced". Then I chose "," as decimal separator and I left empty the thousand separator field. But now it does not work. Why?

Is it possible using this way?

When I originally posted the reply, your profile had Excel 2003 listed. Oh well, in 2007 it is at: MS Office Button -> Excel Options -> Advanced -> and then uncheck "Use system separators" and specify what seperators you'd like.

As for using the text to columns, that should be just fine.

    inqmobile,

If none of the suggestions work in my first post, then please provide a dummy workbook that is experiencing the issue so we can see what's happening.

Re: Problem with decimal and thousand separators

I will show what I have to do.

I have this row in a txt file:

    ggsn | APN-datacard | 2012-08-06 00:00:00 | 153.270 |

Then I have to copy this value on excel. Since I want that each value between | is inserted in a single cell, I followed these steps:

I copied the text data on an excel table, then I clicked on "Text to columns", then "delimited", and then I wrote | on the "other" field.

Then I need that the dot is changed into comma.

what do I have to do?

Re: Problem with decimal and thousand separators

    Before doing text to columns,

Excel Options, Advanced, Editing options, untick Use system separators, and set the decimal separator to a comma.
