    Matching Values with Criteria

I'm still struggling learning how to properly use the INDEX and MATCH functions.

    Excel Help-Balance Sheet.xlsx

^in this spreadsheet, I have a balance sheet and want to see the progress of the monthly balance sheet compared to past years so I can project into the future. I'm just not sure how the MATCH formula would work, or if I should even be using that

I want to take the monthly number in the second box whenever it says "C" under tje specific month and input that number into the year that has "C" under it. For example, suppose it was Oct 2012 and now I want to pull the year end results for Nov 2012. I would change the C under Oct to A and the E under Nov to C. When I do that, the number in the 1st box (the yearly number) displays the monthly number from Nov instead of Oct.

Worst case scenario, I'd have to write a long IF() function, but I know there has to be an easier way to do it.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks for the future input!

from what i understand, you are not looking to SUM any numbers, so you may just be able to use simple INDEX/MATCH like you conjectured...
