    Conditional formatting by the row

I have a row of election results by precinct. Five candidates. I want the winner of each precinct to pop up green or red or whatever.
I can do this for one row, and one row only. The remaining 2,340 seem to need hand formatting and that would be ridiculous, right?

    Mac Office 2011

I'm using top 10 (reduced to top 1), but when I try to extend the formatting with the painter, it only picks out the single top number in the selected multi-row array, not each row. I've tried formulas, but that doesn't seem an easy way to pick the top of five possible without some brutal formula building.

    What am I missing?

Re: Conditional formatting by the row

Use this formula in CF for Cell A1 assuming each row has values from Col A to Col E

    =A1=MAX($A1:$E1)

and copy --paste special --formats across your range

Re: Conditional formatting by the row

You probably have an absolute cell reference, for example, $A$1. Change it so the row is relative, that is, $A1.

Re: Conditional formatting by the row

Thanks, people, the formula works fine. TM, there was no cell reference in the Top 10 format style I was using.

Now for something a little more complex. I have a list of precincts and the party affiliation count for 7 parties. I'd like the precinct number to turn a different color for the dominant registration, or in the alternate, have a separate column that shows what the dominant precinct party is.

Let me know if I'm not supposed to ask a second question in a thread ...
