all microsoft has to say is
however i have just tried it with delete and it works fine have you tried CTRL+Y.?Repeat the last action
To repeat the last action, click Repeat on the Edit menu, or press CTRL+Y.
NOTE Some actions, such as using a function in a cell, cannot be repeated. If you can't repeat the last action, the Repeat command changes to Can't Repeat.

Interesting suggestion. "Ctrl Y" does repeat the action. So why, I wonder, does not the
Repeat" icon on the quick action toolbar also work?
you deleted specific cells so you can't redo that action (unless you undo it first) as the cells can't be deleted twice. it's not a 'repeat' button - it's a redo button - and only really works in the context of the undo stack.
btw there is a repeat button that you can add to the toolbar if you like.

Josie
if at first you don't succeed try doing it the way your wife told you to
JosephP - The fact that the "Repeat" button I have added to the toolbar does not work is the reason why I have posted the query in the first place.
works ok for me delete contents of a1 then repeat on b1 ,what do you mean by delete?
apologies - most folk don't know they are two separate commands and, as you say, the repeat button should work (it does for me when deleting cells) so I erroneously assumed you were talking about redo.
OK. Thanks for your feedback. Let me try to be more detailed about the problem.
I see the problem when I'm trying to update a spreadsheet (a Workbook, if you will). What I do is to create a new column with fresh data on the right side of the spreadsheet, and then delete the older data in Column A on the left side.
To accomplish that, I highlight some of the older data in Column A, and go through the process of clicking on Delete / Delete Cells / Shift cells left.
Due to the peculiar nature of the way I have structured the spreadsheet, it is necessary to highlight other cells and then repeat the process. It would simplify the procedure if I could simply click on a "Redo" icon (I have misnamed it "Repeat" for which I apologize) on the Quick Access Toolbar rather than going through the multi-click process, or even doing a <Ctrl Y>.
I wonder if something might be incorrectly numerated in Registry, but don't know where to look.
Ok, to clarify:
By default there are some buttons on the QAT, including one for Undo (curved arrow pointing left) and one for Redo (curved arrow pointing right). The keyboard shortcuts for these actions are CTRL+Z and CTRL+Y, respectively.
By customizing the QAT you can add an icon for Repeat (circular arrow with pointer going counter-clockwise). This also uses the CTRL+Y keyboard shortcut.
If I type in a bunch of data in A1:D10, then delete cells A2:A4 and choose shift cells to the left, I can then select (for example) cells C5:C10 and click the Repeat button and it does exactly what it is supposed to. Cells C5:C10 are deleted, and the cells from D5:D10 move left into column C to replace them. I can then select other cells and continue repeating the process without any issues.
Are you saying you cannot do these steps?
at the risk of laboring the point, the repeat icon you have is an arrow in a circle going counter-clockwise, and not a clockwise arrow in an approximate semi-circle?
this page should just clarify what I am referring to: http://excelsemipro.com/2011/01/redo...ands-in-excel/

JosephP - I am a dummy. The icon I set up on my Quick Access Toolbar was "Redo". The icon I should have used (in fact the icon I thought I had installed) was "Repeat". I have customized the toolbar and installed "Repeat". Voila! It does exactly what it is supposed to do, and exactly what I wanted. Thank you for getting me to take a closer look at what I had done.
glad we got it fixed for you :-)
