I need a formula to seperate first and last names into different cells

    Hello all,

I was given a database that has the person's first and last name in the same cell. However, I need to split them up into seperate cells. Is there a quick and easy way to do this? I would assume you use the LEFT function and and select the number of characters to the right of a space, but how do I get the formula to select these cells and seperate them?

    UPDATE: SOLVED

    Hi MSP,

Are you sure that there are only First Name and Last name i.e., no middle name ?
If that is the case, I would suggest you to go for Text - to - column feature of Excel

    Hi MSP,

Find the attached that will overcome some of dilipandey's concerns. Look at the formulas for First and Last from the Full Name fields in the attached.

@dilipandey - an example of what you mean is a lot better than "go fo Text - to - column". How would you get the last name in this case?

Marvin, can you reattach this as a .xls file? My machine can't handle an xlsx file.

    Thanks,

MSP, there is a great tool called ASAP Utilities that does this very easily.

Hi rpmulli - it is easier if you put a link to it. Searching the net I find it at:
    http://www.asap-utilities.com/
I'm also looking for the exact call from the add-in that does what the OP wants. Could you point out the utility that does it from:
    http://www.asap-utilities.com/asap-u...list.php?lang=

My problem with Add-Ins is that Generic Excel can do most of these without needing an add-in. I believe if we learn to use the tool (Excel) we won't need Add-Ins.

Re: I need a formula to seperate first and last names into different cells

    Hi MSP,

I will again suggest if you have only "first name" and "last name" in your data (as your example shows), go for Text - to - column feature of excel. select the data and press Alt + D + E key combination and you'll get the Text To column window where you can choose the Delimited option and on the next window, choose Space as delimiter.

@ MarvinP, I do not have any concern and can handle these types of formula demanding queries very easily but just wanted to show the "easy" and quick way to user as per the example shared by him. Cheers

Marvin, I forgot to thank you for the Spreadsheet. It was a huge help. Thanks!
