Excel Spreadsheet Options not Remembered

I have the problem that when I select the options from the file menu then the fomulas menu, where I set the workbook calculation to automatic from manual it is not remembered so when I open the spreadsheet again after saving and closing the calculation option is back on manual. This is happening for three out of ten worksheets!?

the calculation setting depends on the setting of the first workbook opened no matter what subsequent workbooks were saved with (unless they use code to change the setting)
