I don't know for sure but this may indicate a corrupt file. If so, there are numerous strategies. The safest/most definitive is rebuilding the file from scratch, but that may be much work on a large file, so it's a judgment call as to how badly and definitively you need a reliable repaired file. A quicker approach may be to open with another Excel version or the spreadsheet product at OpenOffice.org; if successful, save, and reopen with 2003 again.
