Trying to convert lower to upper case

Hi All,
I am trying to convert a column with lower case to upper. It's a while since I used a formula and I seem to forgotten how to do it..
I have inserted a blank column next to the one I wish to convert formatted as text. I have placed in the field next to the first cell to convert

=UPPER(??)
Where ?? refers to the cell to convert and hitting return. However nothing is happening-just the text I input remains. Any ideas please?

BTW I just did it in a different file and it's perfect.

If nothing changes with

=UPPER(A2)

or whatever cell ref you have.
Check that Calculation is set to automatic not manual.
Tools > Options ... Calculation Tab

thanks for the speedy reply. I actually deleted the column and created a new one further on, then repeated the formula and it worked..
