could you explain why the ctrl + shift + enter works?

what i was doing before was selecting the entire range and then pressing ctrl + shift + enter (similar to the transpose function) so that was why i was only getting the first entry repeated. but why does it work to confirm the function with just the first cell in the range and then drag it down?
