Keeping a count in a field based on a value from a column in another worksheet.

Hi everyone, I'm trying to create a function that will basically count how many times a specific value occurs in column on another worksheet. I'm having some issues and have tried a few different functions. I'm sure someone on here has done something similar to this. Let me know if you can help.

    Thanks,
    -NM

Would be nice to know what version of Excel you are using?

    Good day,

    Use the COUNTIF function.

Please Login or Register to view this content.
where Column A is the column on Sheet1 that has the data and Cell B1 represents the specific value you want counted

Or sumproduct if you have different depending values.

Or maybe with a pivot table.

Ok, I got the COUNTIF function to work. And I'm using Excel 2007.

Now, just to make this a little more complicated, I have to also filter out another column before I actually count the values I'm looking for to make sure that column isn't blank. If it is blank, I need to count in a different field.

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook. The workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.
