Single Bar Chart - This should be easy, right?

I am trying to create one single bar chart listing $'s and %'s of each data series. To avoid having a pie chart of a pie chart, of a pie chart and getting dizzy looking at all the round bits of information, I thought I would try a bar instead of another pie chart. I think you should be able to look at all the information represented and readily know what the information is. In Excel 2007, I have been unable to change the stacked bars chart into one single bar chart.

Is it even possible to do this in Excel 2007?
Thanks in advance if anyone is able to assist.

Clustered bar chart? That might be what you want. How many data series?

    1) How is the data organized in the worksheet?

    2) How do you want the chart to look?

Hmmm...not sure what a clustered bar chart is, probably wherein is the problem. I can attached or email the spreadsheet to you.

I have been trying to use a stacked bar chart, not a clustered bar chart. Basically, I would like all the information displayed in one single bar, each chart would have just one bar, data would show %'s and $'s for each.

There are two kinds of column/bar charts in excel: clustered and stacked.

(BTW, column charts are up and bar charts are across--that's pretty much the only difference).

Some microsoft documentation for creating them--as well as some description. In general though:

    Clustered:
Each y-value per x-value is placed next to the last one.

    Stacked:
Each next y-value per x-value is placed on top of the last one.

If you've only got one data series, then the difference between a clustered chart with only one series (no other series next to it), and a stacked chart with one series (no other series on top of it)--the difference is literally invisible.

I suspect that you might be also feeding your x-axis into your chart--don't. Bar/column charts assume that every series you put into it is a y-value.

The way to change the x-axis labels from autonumbering to an array of cells is:

Create the chart => right click => Select Data Source => Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels: click "Edit" button => enter (type or select) the array.

That being said, you're saying you want one data series, but then you talk about graphing two: (1) $ value and (2) percent.

Of course, graphing the percent contribution of every element, versus the raw value of every element, will produce bars with exactly the same relative proportions.
