amending target grade, based on entered data

    Hello!

I have a spreadsheet I am working on to help me keep track of my grades. I want to be able to have a 'target grade' column as a percentage which changes based on marks already entered.

Say for example that i have an overall target of 65% (cell B12) for a given course. I attain 50% for the first assessment and now need to get higher marks for the rest of the assessments (Cells E2:E8) to hit the original 65% goal. If possible, cells E2 would not change once a value has been enterd in B2, and so on. It would be great if this was formulated rather than just me tying different marks. I have attached the spreadsheet in question here.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Cheers

    Hi Sprax,

I used to teach math and have a pet peeve about averaging percentages. I think you're headed down the road of doing this. Get smarter and read:

Also look at Student T scores for grading and a better method.
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

    Hi MarvinP,

Sorry I wasn't more specific before. I have taken into account the weightings for each assessment, and so the 'running average' is based on the weighted percentages over percentage of course completed (which is the sum of weightings where marks have been entered).

I'd really appreciate a maths teachers opinion on this, so if you have the time check out how I have constructed the formulas and let me know what you think.

    Cheers

Ok - I see all your formulas and they look valid.

Now, to use the power of Excel you should really put your data in a table. Then use running totals in a Pivot Table to see where you stand.

    Hi,

I'd search the net for "Excel Grade Book" and see what others have done first. Your problem of wanting to calculate the score needed on many blank tests to arrive at 65% is too vague when there are lots of blanks.
