    CROSSWALK Worksheet

I am working on a new table to simplify things.
I have right now worksheet that has the following column headings and data

User Input CROSSWALK ITEM # ITEM Description
    TRAIN 010 CAR
    CARR 020 TRAIN
    HOOUSE 030 GARAGE
    Garage 040 HOUSE

I want to create a macro OR some type of look up that will
#1 examine [User Input] - in column A
#2 find what is similar in [ITEM Description] - in column D
#3 put the [ITEM #] in column C into [CROSSWALK] - column B

Can anyone give me assistance on this? I tried V & H lookups however because sometimes the [User Input] does NOT match as in my example nothing will work. Can not think of another solution... Any ideas?

    Much advanced thanks.

    Steve

    Re: CROSSWALK Worksheet

    Steve,

    Welcome to the forum!
For something like this, I'd recommend a data-validation drop-down list in column A for the user input, instead of letting them type it in manually. This will avoid spelling errors as shown in your sample data, and guarantees that a vlookup (or similar) formula will work just fine.

See attached for how it works.

Here's some links to get you started with Data Validation:
